A Child’s First Bite of Chocolate
The other day, a friend of mine was telling me about the fun her son had eating chocolate for the first time. It’s a cute story and one many parents can relate to so I decided to share it with you.
Kay and her husband have two children, James age 3 and Melanie age 2. Kay is somewhat careful about not giving too much sugar to her children. Usually desserts at her house are in the evening at dinnertime and normally consist of a piece of fruit.
Kay doesn't believe in using artificial sweeteners either because research shows it’s full of chemicals that are not healthy for children to digest. So when she does allow the kids sweets, they're modest portions of real sweets like a slice of homemade pie, cake, ice cream or it’s something she bought fresh and preservative-free from the local bakery.
Kay said that the first time her kids had chocolate they nearly freaked out because they enjoyed it so much. She brought them some chocolate muffins at the local bakery. Each would get one for dessert.
Kay relates that when the kids were handed their first chocolate muffin, they examined the muffin, then smelled it. Finally, her son James jumped right in and ate a piece of the chocolate muffin. Then her daughter Melanie ate some. She said what they did next was so cute. Their son James widened his eyes then said rather emphatically “Mom this is so sweet!”
Kay asked him if it was too sweet and if he didn’t want it. James thought for a second then said no – “this is so yummy too!” She laughed, remembering her own first experience of chocolate. Kay’s daughter Melanie had no problem finishing her chocolate treat off as well.
When they had finished, with some chocolate still on their hands and face, her son James looked up and said, “Mommy, can we have more “ with those pleading eyes hard for a parent to resist. Kay said she resisted and just smiled at them and said they would get chocolate again, but the big muffin was more than enough or they would get sick from too much candy. Melanie responded “Yes, don't get sick.”
Children can be so much fun and chocolate can be so much fun for them, in moderation of course.
